Purpose:
Davyz Youth Foundation was founded in 2007 with the goal of providing quality after-school programs to urban communities. Many of the surrounding communities have very few structured activities available to youth during afternoon hours. The Shooting Starz After-School Program provides activities that encourage academic excellence, creativity and leading a healthy lifestyle. As young people involved discover new interests and engage in positive community activities, they build character and find new ways to learn. The program’s objectives are to enhance personal growth and academic achievement by offering positive alternatives during the afternoon hours when young people are more vulnerable to negative peer pressures and at-risk behaviors. The program provides a wide range of activities that offer young people (ages 6 – 12) a safe, supervised place to be after the final school bell rings. The program enables students to develop socials skills, gain self-esteem, enhance academic performance, and improve their overall fitness.
Program:
The Shooting Starz After-School Program works together with surrounding schools and community centers. The program runs in 8-week sessions with 1 week breaks in between each session. Classes run Monday through Friday. The program begins with a one hour tutoring clinic that offers assistance with assignments, specialized tutoring by subject, as well as establishing good study habits. A light snack is offered during this time. After the study hour, children are then directed to their chosen classes, which range from sports skills to art classes. At the conclusion of each session, there will be an exhibition event where students are given the opportunity to display the skills they have learned to friends and family. Additionally, the sports teams participate in various tournaments and competitions throughout the year.
